The study found that dog domestication dates back 11,000 years to the end of the last Ice Age. This demonstrates that dogs were domesticated before any other species known to man. At the time, our canine companions were common throughout the northern hemisphere and had already split into five distinct types.

Pugs and poodles may not look the part, but all dogs are descended from wolves if you go far enough back in time. Gray wolves and dogs diverged about 15,000 to 40,000 years ago from an extinct wolf species. There is broad scientific agreement on that point and evolutionary anthropologist Brian Hare’s interpretation of what happened next. ‘Dog domestication was one of the most incredible events in human history,’ says Hare.

According to one similar theory, early humans captured wolf pups, kept them as pets, and gradually domesticated them. This could have happened around 10,000 years ago, around the time of the rise of agriculture. The oldest fossils generally accepted to be domestic dogs date back about 14,000 years. Still, several disputed fossils dating back more than twice that period may also be dogs or their no longer entirely wolf ancestors.

Since more recent genetic studies indicate that domestication occurred much earlier, a different theory has gained widespread acceptance among scientists. According to the idea of “survival of the friendliest,” wolves have domesticated mainly themselves
