The brown trout, also known as Salmo trutta, is a type of salmonid fish that is native to Europe but has since been widely introduced into suitable settings all over the world. It consists of exclusively freshwater populations that are known as the riverine ecotype, Salmo trutta morpha fario, a lacustrine ecotype that is known as the lake trout, S. trutta morpha lacustris,[3][4] and anadromous forms that are known as the sea trout, S. trutta morpha trutta. The latter only travels back to freshwater to reproduce, as it spends the majority of its life in saltwater environments. [5] There are several other names for sea trout in Ireland and Britain, including sewin in Wales, finnock in Scotland, peal in the West Country, mort in North West England, and white trout in Ireland. In Ireland, sea trout are commonly referred to as white trout.
