The rainbow trout, scientifically known as Oncorhynchus mykiss, is a species of trout that is indigenous to the cold-water rivers and streams that flow into the Pacific Ocean in Asia and North America. The steelhead, also known as “steelhead trout,” is an anadromous (sea-run) form of the coastal rainbow trout (O. m. irideus) or Columbia River redband trout (O. m. gairdneri). It spends two to three years in the ocean before returning to freshwater to spawn. Steelhead are sometimes referred to as “steelhead salmon.” Steelhead are also the name given to the freshwater variants of this fish that have been introduced into the Great Lakes and that move into tributaries to reproduce.
