About once every two years, female green turtles lay their eggs, but the number of nesting females might fluctuate significantly yearly. Nests anywhere from three to five times a season. Nests average 115 eggs, and the incubation period is roughly 60 days. Sea turtle eggs hatch at various times of the year, but most commonly in the summer. The temporary egg tooth, known as a carbuncle, helps the hatchling crack the shell. It might take baby turtles three to seven days to emerge from their nests. Most hatchlings don’t venture out of the nest until after dark.
The chances of a hatchling reaching adulthood are low, somewhere about 1 in 1,000. Baby sea turtles consume everything from squid and fish eggs to squid and crustaceans to sargassum seaweed to jellyfish to mollusks and crustaceans. Tragically, hatchlings eat trash or other non-food items like tarballs.
