Dogs have been companion animals in modern times. A companion/ dog is a dog that does not work, providing only companionship as a pet, rather than usefulness by doing specific tasks

The history of dogs dates back 11,000 years to the end of the last Ice Age, making them the first animal species to be domesticated. All dogs are descended from wolves, and their domestication was one of the most incredible events in human history. While the exact timeline of domestication remains debated, it is clear that humans and dogs have a unique and special relationship that has lasted for thousands of years.
